Works both ways
The tool runs in two directions. Add mode applies the rate to a tax-exclusive (net) price to give you the tax amount and the gross total. Extract mode takes a tax-inclusive (gross) figure and pulls the tax back out. For example, adding 20% VAT to a $100 net price gives $20 tax and $120 total. Reverse it: extracting 20% from a $120 gross amount returns $20 tax and a $100 net price.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Divide the gross amount by (1 + the rate). At 20% you divide the gross price by 1.20; the result is the net price and the difference is the VAT contained within it.

The net (tax-exclusive) price is the amount before tax is added. The gross (tax-inclusive) price is the final amount the customer pays, with the tax included.
