Slope Calculator

Slope and line equation from two points

What does this tool do?

The slope calculator lets you enter the coordinates of two points and instantly find the slope (m) of the line through them, the distance between the points, the midpoint, the angle to the horizontal, and the line equation. It is ideal for students working through geometry and algebra homework, and for anyone who wants a quick check.

How to use it

  1. Enter your values into the fields.
  2. The result is calculated instantly.
  3. Read or copy the result.

The slope formula and what it returns

Slope is the ratio of vertical change to horizontal change between two points: m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁). Beyond this ratio, the tool computes the distance between the points using the Pythagorean theorem, the midpoint from the coordinate averages, and the angle the line makes with the horizontal in degrees. It also combines the slope and the y-intercept to build the line equation in y = mx + b form. Every result updates instantly as you change the values.

Vertical lines and undefined slope

When the two points share the same x coordinate, the line is perfectly vertical and its slope is undefined, because the denominator in the formula becomes zero. In that case the tool shows "undefined" for the slope and gives the equation as x = constant. For horizontal lines, where the y coordinates match, the slope is zero. Recognising this distinction matters for understanding the true direction of a line and avoiding calculation mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the slope sometimes show as 'undefined'?

If the two points have the same x value, the line is vertical and the denominator of the slope formula is zero, making the slope undefined. The tool then writes the equation as x = constant.

What does the angle value mean?

It is the angle the line makes with the positive x-axis, in degrees. A positive slope gives an upward angle, a negative slope a downward one.

How is the line equation derived?

It first computes the slope (m), then finds the y-intercept with b = y₁ − m·x₁, and presents the result in y = mx + b form.
