What does this tool do?
The Golden Ratio Calculator computes the longer, shorter and whole segments using the golden ratio (φ ≈ 1.618). Enter a single known value to split a length into two aesthetically balanced parts.
How to use it
- Enter your values into the fields.
- The result is calculated instantly.
- Read or copy the result.
The method
In the golden ratio, longer/shorter = whole/longer = φ. If you enter the whole, longer = whole/φ and shorter = whole − longer; if you enter the longer part, the whole = longer × φ. The constant φ equals (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618.
Common use cases
Designers use it to build typographic scales and layout grids, while architects and photographers balance composition. It is ideal in UI design for setting card, margin and heading sizes with harmonious proportions.
Frequently asked questions
Which value should I enter — the whole or a segment?
Either works; supply the whole to get both segments, or supply the longer or shorter part to derive the remaining two values through the φ ratio.
What exactly is φ?
φ is an irrational constant defined by (1+√5)/2, approximately 1.6180339887.
