The difference between the four formats
In scientific notation the mantissa is kept between 1 and 10 and multiplied by a power of ten, for example 1234500 becomes 1.2345 × 10^6. E notation gives the same value as 1.2345e6, the form used in programming. Engineering notation always makes the exponent a multiple of three (10^3, 10^6, 10^9), so it maps directly onto unit prefixes like kilo, mega and giga. The fourth line shows the plain decimal equivalent, and all of them update instantly as you type.
Input formats and copying
You can type the number as plain decimal (1234500), in E notation (1.23e6) or as 1.23×10^6; the tool strips out commas and spaces automatically. Negative numbers and decimals are supported, and zero is handled as a special case. How is engineering notation different from scientific notation?
