Logarithm Calculator

Logarithm in any base (log, ln, log2)

What does this tool do?

Logarithm Calculator instantly computes log_b(x) for any base. Enter a value and a base, and the tool returns the result with up to six decimals while also showing the log₁₀ (common), ln (natural), and log₂ (binary) equivalents at the same time. It is handy for students, engineers, and anyone who needs a quick logarithm.

How to use it

  1. Enter your values into the fields.
  2. The result is calculated instantly.
  3. Read or copy the result.

Powered by the change-of-base formula

The tool uses the change-of-base rule: log_b(x) = ln(x) / ln(b). That lets you compute in any valid base you like, not just 10 or e, but 2, 7, 16, or even a decimal base. The value must be positive, and the base must be positive and different from 1; otherwise the tool flags the mathematically undefined case with a clear warning. The result is shown trimmed of trailing zeros for readability.

See three common logarithms at a glance

Below the main result, three cards show the most common logarithms of your value: log₁₀ appears in engineering and pH calculations, ln in calculus and growth or decay problems, and log₂ in computer science and information theory (measured in bits). These cards stay visible whenever you change the base, making it easy to compare the same number across different bases. All computation happens in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the value and base have to be positive?

Logarithms are only defined for positive real numbers, so the value (x) must be greater than zero. The base must also be positive and cannot equal 1, because a logarithm in base 1 is undefined.

What is the difference between natural log (ln) and log₁₀?

ln uses Euler's number e (≈2.718) as its base and appears in natural growth problems. log₁₀ is base 10 and is preferred for scales, decibels, and pH. The tool displays both at once.

Can I enter a negative or fractional base?

You can enter a fractional base such as 2.5, as long as it is positive and not equal to 1. A negative base or a negative value is invalid, and the tool shows an error message.
