The Difference Between Bits and Bytes
The core rule is simple: 1 byte = 8 bits. Internet speeds are usually measured in bits (Mb/s) while file sizes are given in bytes (MB). That's why a 100 Mb/s connection only downloads about 12.5 MB per second. This tool handles the factor-of-8 conversion automatically so you never have to do the math by hand. Remember: lowercase 'b' means bits, uppercase 'B' means bytes.

Providers advertise speed in bits (Mb/s) because the number looks bigger. To get the real download speed, divide by 8: 80 Mb/s equals roughly 10 MB/s.
