What does this tool do?
The Bandwidth Calculator works out the relationship between data size, network speed, and transfer time. Pick one of three modes to find how long a file takes to download, how much data moves in a given time, or what connection speed you need; common presets from ADSL to 5G fill the form in one click.
How to use it
- Enter your values into the fields.
- The result is calculated instantly.
- Read or copy the result.
Three calculation modes
In 'Calculate time' mode you enter file size and connection speed to get the download or upload duration. In 'Calculate size' mode you enter speed and time to see the total data transferable in that window. In 'Calculate speed' mode you enter size and a target time to find the minimum speed you need. You can freely switch between byte units (B, KB, MB, GB, TB) and bit-rate units (bps, Kbps, Mbps, Gbps).
Avoid the bit-versus-byte mix-up
Internet speeds are measured in bits (Mbps) while file sizes are in bytes (MB), and one byte equals eight bits. So a 1 GB file on a 100 Mbps line theoretically downloads in about 80 seconds, not 10. The tool handles this 8x conversion automatically, translating the advertised Mbps figure into accurate real-world file transfer times.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the result a bit longer than my ISP's promised time?
The calculation assumes an ideal, theoretical speed. In practice, protocol overhead, network congestion, WiFi losses, and server limits make real transfers somewhat slower. Treat the result as a best-case lower bound.
What happens when I click a common speed tile?
Clicking a preset like ADSL, Fiber, WiFi 6, or 5G automatically fills the speed value and unit into the form. This lets you quickly test the calculation for a typical connection without typing anything by hand.
