File Size Converter

Convert bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB

What does this tool do?

The File Size Converter shows a single value at once in bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and their binary counterparts KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB, just by entering a number and picking a unit. It saves time for anyone dealing with download limits, storage plans or bandwidth.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your data into the left field.
  2. The result is generated instantly on the right.
  3. Use the Copy button to grab the output.

Decimal vs. binary units

The tool makes the two families clear: KB, MB, GB and TB are powers of 1000 (the SI standard), while KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB are powers of 1024 (the IEC standard). For example, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes whereas 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Operating systems often display binary values while drive makers use decimal, which is why a '500 GB' disk appears smaller on your computer.

Practical use

Type a number in the value box and choose the source unit; every row updates instantly and your selected unit is highlighted. Each row has a copy button to grab a result with one click. Decimal inputs like 1.5 GB are supported. It's ideal for everyday tasks such as checking how many MiB a video takes, the TB equivalent of a backup, or converting an API response size into bytes.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between 1 MB and 1 MiB?

1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes (base 1000), while 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes (base 1024). The gap grows with each larger unit, which is why both appear on separate rows.

Why do results sometimes look rounded?

Very small or very large values are formatted to significant digits for readability; numbers of 1e15 and above are shown in scientific (exponential) notation.
