How zalgo text works
The zalgo effect relies on Unicode's combining marks, special characters that take up no space of their own and instead stack onto the preceding letter. When you pile dozens of upper, lower and middle marks onto a single 'a', the glyph spills upward and downward into a creepy, overflowing form.
