Truncate by characters or by words
Two cutting modes are available. In character mode the text is cut at exactly the number of characters you set, which is ideal for meta descriptions and tweets that have a strict length limit. In word mode the limit is measured in whole words, so preview sentences end on a natural boundary. Type any marker you like into the ellipsis field (…, ..., » or 'read more') to customise how the trimmed output ends.
Why the word-boundary option matters
When you tick the 'Word boundary' box in character mode, the tool pulls the cut back to the nearest space so a word is never sliced in half, keeping the result clean and readable. Turn the box off and the cut happens at the exact character count, which lets you count every character when you must respect a very tight length cap. The right choice depends entirely on your use case.
Frequently asked questions
Is the ellipsis counted toward the character limit?
No. The text is trimmed to the limit first, then the ellipsis is added afterward. If you need the total length including the ellipsis to stay within the cap, lower your limit by the length of the marker.
Why is the output shorter than my limit when 'Word boundary' is on?
Because the tool pulls the cut back to the last full space to avoid splitting a word in half, so it ends on a clean word rather than a partial one.
What happens if the text is already shorter than the limit?
Nothing is cut and no ellipsis is added; the text is shown unchanged. Truncation only kicks in when the input exceeds the limit.
