What does this tool do?
Text Statistics is a free tool that measures the text you paste in real time. It shows counts of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and lines, plus average word and sentence length, the longest word, and an estimated reading time. It gives writers, students, and content creators a handy at-a-glance summary.
How to use it
- Paste your text into the input area.
- Adjust the options to fit your needs.
- Copy the processed text.
Ten metrics at a glance
The tool updates as you type and presents ten separate statistics as cards: total characters, characters without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, and lines. Sentences are counted by periods, exclamation marks, and question marks, while paragraphs are counted as blocks separated by blank lines. This lets you judge a text's length and density from several angles on one screen, and you can copy every result with a single click.
Reading time and averages
Reading time is calculated from an average pace of about 250 words per minute and is shown in seconds for short text and in minutes for longer text. Average word length is based on letter count, while average sentence length is the number of words divided by the number of sentences. These averages help you sense how dense or fluent the writing is and decide whether to simplify your sentences.
Frequently asked questions
How are sentences counted?
The text is split on periods, exclamation marks, and question marks, and every non-empty piece counts as a sentence. Because periods in abbreviations can also be read as boundaries, the count may be slightly high in text with many abbreviations.
What reading speed is the reading time based on?
It uses an average adult reading pace of 250 words per minute. Times under a minute are shown in seconds, and longer ones in minutes and seconds.
What does the characters-without-spaces count measure?
It gives the character count with all whitespace (spaces, tabs, line breaks) removed, which is useful for seeing the real content length in fields with a strict character limit.
