How Roman numerals work
The Roman system uses seven base symbols: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1000). Symbols are written from largest to smallest and added together; when a smaller symbol sits to the left of a larger one, it is subtracted instead. That is why IV is four (5−1) and IX is nine (10−1). The subtraction rule keeps any symbol from repeating more than three times in a row, so numbers stay compact.
Why the limit is 3999
Standard Roman notation only defines symbols up to M (1000), so the largest value writable with plain letters is 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). For bigger numbers, Romans drew a bar above a symbol to multiply it by 1000 (the vinculum), but that notation is not available on ordinary keyboards. To stay accurate and readable, this converter caps input at the practical ceiling of 3999.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert zero or negative numbers?
No. The Roman system has no symbol for zero or negative values, so the tool only accepts whole numbers from 1 to 3999.
Does it accept lowercase Roman numerals?
Yes. The converter uppercases your input before decoding, so 'mmxxiv' is read the same as 'MMXXIV' and returns 2024.
What happens if I type an invalid Roman numeral?
If the input contains unrecognized letters or does not resolve to a valid value, the tool shows an 'Invalid Roman numeral' message instead of a result.
