How the MOD-97 checksum works
The tool first moves the first four characters of the IBAN to the end, then converts every letter to its numeric equivalent (A=10, B=11 ... Z=35). The resulting large number is valid only when its remainder after division by 97 equals exactly 1. This standard ISO 7064 method mathematically catches single-digit typos and most transposed characters. The entire calculation runs in your browser, so your account number is never transmitted to any server.
Country and length checking
Each country has a fixed IBAN length, for example 26 characters for Turkey, 22 for Germany, 27 for France, and 24 for Spain. The tool reads the country code from the first two letters and shows whether the length matches the expected value for that country. For countries not in its list, it applies the general 15-34 character range. Country, length, format, and checksum results are flagged separately so you can see exactly where an error lies.
