Why SI and IEC Units Differ
Manufacturers market drive sizes in SI units: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems, however, often use binary IEC units: 1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. That's exactly why a '1 TB' drive shows up as roughly 931 GiB in Windows. This tool displays both systems at once, so you can clearly see that the 'missing' capacity is simply a different unit of measure, not lost space.

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my 1 GB drive show as 1 GB on my computer?
The manufacturer counts a GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes (SI), while your OS often shows 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (IEC). The gap is about 7 percent; no data is lost, it's just measured differently.
What's the difference between KB and KiB?
KB means a decimal 1,000 bytes, while KiB means a binary 1,024 bytes. Network speeds and storage marketing use KB/MB; memory and RAM are usually measured in KiB/MiB.
